LES of conductive flows under the influence of a magnetic field

Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) constitutes a promising approach in the numerical study of turbulent flows and is steadily approaching a level of maturity that enables its use in practical engineering applications. Until recently, the study of LES in the case of conductive flows had not received much attention. For this reason, there are still a lot of open questions that need to be considered in order to develop LES subgrid-scale models suitable for the study of MHD flows at low magnetic Reynolds numbers. Among them is the study of small-scale anisotropies that characterize MHD flows in this regime. In this seminar, an overview of previous LES results will be presented and in particular the remarkable efficiency of the dynamic Smagorinsky subgrid-scale model in the context of homogeneous turbulence will be demonstrated. Recent findings concerning the scale dependance of anisotropies in MHD (in the low Rm regime) will also be described. Finally, some future directions of research will be presented and in particular an ongoing effort to produce a versatile LES code capable of studying MHD phenomena in complex geometries.
