Cooler in the electrical steam generator circuit

The cooler consists of a cylindrical vessel arranged horizontally, in which the water of the electrical heater circuit flows around the U-tubes. The cooling water, which is sucked by means of the feed water pump from the blow off tank (t < 60 °C), flows for the heat removal through the 11 U-tubes. The tubes have got a diameter of 25 mm.

The cooler uses a heat exchange surface of 6.21 m². Its maximum values for pressure and temperature amount to 10 MPa and 300 °C for the U-tubes and 7.6 MPa for the vessel.

This heat exchanger cools the water of the electrical heater circuit before it enters in the circulation pump, in order to prevent cavitation on the suction side of this pump. The design of the cooler assures that the subcooling rate is always more then 3 K. In addition, the steam generation rate can be influenced by a controlled cooling and therefore the pressure in the electrical heater circuit can be regulated. Feed water whose mass flow is adjusted by a control valve in the return pipe is used as cooling medium.
