Air/water experiments in vertical test sections

The test section circuit and the compressed air system of the test facility are used for air/water experiments at the vertical test sections.

The test section pump supports the water from the steam drum into the lower part of the both test sections, which can be blocked separately. The required mass flow is adjusted with the help of three parallel control valves and with the frequency converter of the test section pump. The injection of the gas phase is performed by specific injection heads also in the lower leg of the test section. The necessary volume flow is made available from the six parallel compressed air controllers. The measurements are carried out with specific wire-mesh sensors, which are installed at the upper end of the test sections.

The following experimental matrixes provide measurements of ten series of measurements. The dark fields emphasise the points measured in each case. The axes indicate the superficial velocities of the fluid and gas phases. Below the experimental matrixes, the most important test conditions of the experiments are registered.

Test section DN 200; series: LD01

Experimental matrix test section DN200 run L20

Boundary conditions:

  • Central air injection with the injection head type K through 60 orifices with a diameter of 6 mm
  • Measurement with two low temperature wire-mesh sensors (64 x 64 electrodes)
  • Distance between the air injection and the measurement plane of the first sensor: 7,606 mm
  • Pressure in the test section: approx. 0.1 MPa
  • Temperature in the test section: 15 - 25 °C

Test section DN 200; series: LD02

Boundary conditions:

  • Central air injection with injection head type I through 152 orifices with a diameter of 0.8 mm
  • Measurement with two low temperature wire-mesh sensors (64 x 64 electrodes)
  • Distance between the air injection and the measurement plane of the first sensor: 7,606 mm
  • Pressure in the test section: approx. 0.1 MPa
  • Temperature in the test section: 20 - 30 °C

Test section DN 50; series: LD03 - LD07

  • Pressure in the test section: approx. 0.1 MPa
  • Temperature in the test section: 25 - 35 °C

Test section DN 50; series: L03, L04

  • Measurement with half-moon shaped obstacle: distance from the measurement plane: 10; 15; 20; 40; 80; 160; 250; 520 mm below or above of the sensor
  • Distance between the gas injection and the measurement plane of the wire-mesh sensor: obstacle above: 5,110 mm and obstacle below: 6,170 mm, respectively
  • Pressure in the test section: approx. 0.1 MPa
  • Temperature in the test section: 23 - 37 °C
