Alternative reactor concepts - The inclined rotating fixed-bed reactor

Although trickle bed reactors are widely employed in the chemical industry they suffer from inherent drawbacks like liquid maldistribution and limitation of the mass transfer of the gaseous reactant to the active sites of the catalyst. To overcome these drawbacks, periodic operation strategies were proposed, which reduce the liquid maldistribution by an inlet flow rate modulation, which is, however, at the expense of additional demands on process measurement and control and on the industrial equipment.

The inclined rotating fixed-bed reactor is proposed as alternative reactor concept for process intensification, which transform the temporal periodic operation into a quasi-stationary spatial periodic operation at fixed gas and liquid flow rates. The reactor inclination forces the gas-liquid mixture to separate, while the superimposed slow reactor rotation induces periodic wetting and draining cycles of the catalyst.
