Online Annual Report 2013

In Brief: Personnel Matters

  • Professorial Appointments / Functions

Prof. Michael Baumann is the Director of the HZDR's newly established Institute of Radiooncology since January 1, 2013. He also heads the Clinic and Polyclinic of Radiotherapy and Radiooncology at the University Hospital Dresden and is the Director of the National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology – OncoRay.

Prof. Michael Bachmann was appointed as the second Director in addition to Prof. Jörg Steinbach at the Institute of Radiopharmaceutical Cancer Research on February 1, 2013. The tumor immunologist also heads the Department of Radioimmunology at the same institute and accepted a Professorship for Translational Radiopharmacology at the TU Dresden.

Prof. Roland Sauerbrey was elected as a member of the Leopoldina on March 27, 2013. Germany's nonpartisan National Academy of Sciences addresses important social topics of the future and communicates the results and achievements to politicians as well as the public at large.

Prof. Thorsten Stumpf is heading the HZDR's Institute of Resource Ecology since October 1, 2013. In early December 2013, the radiochemist was also appointed as a Professor for Radiochemistry / Radioecology at the TU Dresden.

Prof. Christiane Scharf was appointed as a Professor for Metallurgy and the Recycling of High Tech Metals at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg on October 1, 2013. The raw materials specialist also heads the Department of Metallurgy and Recycling at the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology.

  • Awards

HZDR Awards 2013 (presented on February 7, 2014, during the official ceremony for the reopening of the HZDR Library)

The European Cancer Society ECCO (European CanCer Organisation) presented Prof. Michael Baumann (Institute of Radiooncology) with the ECCO Clinical Research Award. With this award, the multidisciplinary umbrella organization for all specialist oncological societies, cancer researchers, and patient associations in Europe honored Prof. Baumann's outstanding contribution to the integration of scientific insights gained in cancer research into clinical practice.

For his research concerning the geochemistry of actinides, Prof. Thorsten Stumpf (Institute of Resource Ecology) received the Fritz Straßmann Award from the Nuclear Chemistry Division of the German Chemical Society (GDCh). The jury was particularly impressed by the detailed explanation of various solid / liquid interface reactions for the radioactive element group of actinides. The radiochemist was able to provide groundbreaking insights into the molecular mechanisms of actinides as they are embedded into the crystal lattice of mineral phases.

The International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG) presented Dr. Raimon Tolosana-Delgado with the 2013 Felix Chayes Prize. The geologist from the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology received the award in honor of his mathematical models for the development of rocks and sediments providing evidence of crude oil and other raw material deposits.

The second place in the contest for the Behnken-Berger Prize, which is awarded to junior scientists by the foundation of the same name every year, was won by Dr. Christian Richter. The research group leader at the "National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology – OncoRay" developed a reliable technology which permits the precise measurement of the radiation dose of laser accelerated and, thus, ultrashort pulsed particle radiation in real time.
