Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf e.V. (HZDR) is a research institute with approximately 1,100 employees and member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. Its interdisciplinary scientific priorities are in the research areas of health, energy, and matter. The work is carried out in close cooperation within the Helmholtz Association as well as with universities, non-university institutes and industry.

PhD Student (m/f)

The position will be available from 1 December 2016. The employment contract is limited to three years. The regular working time will be 19,5 hours per week. The salary is based on the collective agreement TVöD-Bund. The place of work is Dresden-Rossendorf.


  • Diploma or Master's degree or equivalent in physics with very good grades
  • good knowledge of radiation and plasma physics
  • good knowledge of optics and spectroscopy
  • experience with Iasers as well as X-ray and particle diagnostics
  • CAD and programming skills


The PhD student will join the newly established Helmholtz Young lnvestigator Group "Dynamic warm dense matter research with the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (HIBEF)". Particularly, the successful candidate will design, prepare and perform first experiments using HIBEF at European XFEL to investigate highly non-equilibrium excitation and relaxation processes in solid density plasmas created by ultra-high intensity Iasers on femtosecond time scales.
