Bio-fishing for rare earth elements: How protein fragments recycle electronic waste

The circular economy aims to use products and raw materials for as long as possible. In practical terms, this means avoiding waste by reusing and repairing existing products. If this is not possible, they are broken down into their original materials, i.e. raw materials, and recycled. There are often no economical separation processes for the recovery of metals, which occur in the finest particles such as in the light powder of energy-saving light bulbs. BioKollekt is researching a new type of separation process that extracts metals from scrap, process waste or primary raw material mixtures in a targeted manner using specially developed biological collectors. The process is intended to enable the economical recycling of complex material mixtures, particularly in the area of very fine particles. Dr. Franziska Lederer explains how biology helps us with recycling.

The science festival has many other exciting exhibits, workshops, films, science slams and researchers from other Saxon science institutions in store on March 8 and 9. The festival is accessible free of charge without registration.
