New compute nodes for the hypnos cluster

Cluster compute nodes 2016In January 2016 there have been 27 new compute nodes put into operation at the HPC cluster hypnos. The nodes are equipped with the latest Intel processors. 20 of these nodes can be used by all HPC users and can be utilized via the 'default' queue. The other 7 nodes are under exclusive access by the department for Reactor Safety.

Each node is equipped with:

  • 2 Intel Xeon CPUs E5-2698 v3 (2,3 GHz) with 16 CPU cores each
  • 256 GB of main memory (8 GB per core)
  • QDR-InfiniBand adapter (40 GBit/s) for the communication of parallel jobs and the connection to the HPC storage system

In the occasion of attaching the new nodes to the hypnos cluster, the old compute nodes purchased in 2008 and 2008 have been deactivated. The main reason for that is energy efficiency.
