Abstract:

Surface complexation model DLM was coupled with groundwater flow transport model to simulate the transport of U(VI) in shallow groundwaters around a uranium mill tailing site in southern China. The sorption of U(VI) onto clayey soils has a non-linear relationship with pH, reaching maximum around neutral pH and sharply decreasing under acidic and alkaline conditions. According to our modeling results, after 1000 a of decommissioning, the vertical transport of U(VI) could be down to 19 m, and the direction of transport turn horizontally; on the plane, the transport could extend 800 m to west, 1500 m to the south and 2000 m to the north, with a total contaminated area up to about 9 km2.

Comment: U (VI) sorption onto montmorillonite; using DLM-model; pH 2-9
