Student Assistant Position – Analysis of flotation-relevant processes of lithium slags from battery recycling research (Id 463)

Student Assistant

We are looking for a motivated and skilled student to support our research on lithium recovery from slags produced during pyrometallurgical recycling of Li-ion batteries. This work contributes to the German Research Foundation's (DFG) Priority Program 2315 and focuses on innovative separation methods, particularly flotation-based techniques, for engineered artificial minerals (EnAMs). One aim is to gain fundamental insights into interactions at solid-liquid interfaces and to apply this knowledge to sustainable raw material recovery.
Your tasks will include:

  • General research support including data acquisition, processing, and analysis
  • Mineralogical analysis and sample preparation (e.g., crushing, sieving, milling, polishing)
  • Hands-on support in the laboratory with flotation experiments
  • Bubble-particle attachment testing under various conditions
  • Analytical characterization of flotation reagents, e.g. using spectroscopic methods or tensiometry

Department: Processing

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a degree program in chemical engineering, mining engineering, environmental engineering, chemistry, or a related field
  • Solid prior experience in laboratory work (safety, procedures, independence)
  • Interest in mineral processing, sustainable technologies, analytics or materials science
  • Basic knowledge of analytical techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, interface science) is advantageous
  • Reliable, proactive, and able to work both independently and in a team
  • Communication skills in English or German

Conditions

  • Flexible working hours (10–19 hours/week) – easily compatible with your studies
  • Insight into an interdisciplinary research environment
