Halogen element (F, Cl, Br, and I) content and distribution in natural and synthetic sphalerite – a SIMS study (Id 236)

Foto: Sphaleritprobe für SIMS Untersuchungen ©Copyright: René ZiegenrückerDue to crystallochemical considerations, sphalerite (ZnS) as a typical sulfide mineral should not contain high contents of the halogen elements fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine. Current research findings proved at least for chlorine and bromine elevated contents up to 1000 µg*g-1 (Cl) and x0 µg*g-1 (Br). If it appears that the halogen elements are built into the lattice and not in fluid- and mineral inclusions we will be able to draw conclusions about the chemical as well as physicochemical parameters of the ore-forming fluids.
Using the Super-SIMS setup we could prove that all halogens are detactable in natural sphalerites.
The aim of the thesis is to analyse and compare these natural sphalerites by normal SIMS. Additionally halogen-rich synthetic sphalerites will be analysed.
