Laser-plasma accelerators without limits

Press Release of 19.12.2019

Particle physicists harbor secret hopes of developing a new class of laser-plasma accelerators. They are small and inexpensive. But the maximum energy gain achievable per acceleration stage is limited. Or at least it was until now. A research team led by Dr. Alexander Debus from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) has developed a scheme based on theoretical considerations and large-scale simulations that may well approach the energy frontier. This would bring us one step closer to using compact particle accelerators in research and for medical and industrial applications. The scientists have published their findings in the journal Physical Review X (DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevX.9.031044).

Fusion by strong lasers

Press Release of 05.12.2019

Nuclear physics usually involves high energies, as illustrated by experiments to master controlled nuclear fusion. One of the problems is how to overcome the strong electrical repulsion between atomic nuclei which requires high energies to make them fuse. But fusion could be initiated at lower energies with electromagnetic fields that are generated, for example, by state-of-the-art free electron lasers emitting X-ray light. Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) describe how this could be done in the journal Physical Review C.

Intuitive in the virtual reality

Press Release of 29.10.2019

Through the crafty use of magnetic fields, scientists from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the Johannes Kepler University in Linz have developed the first electronic sensor that can simultaneously process both touchless and tactile stimuli. Prior attempts have so far failed to combine these functions on a single device due to overlapping signals of the various stimuli. As the sensor is readily applied to the human skin, it could provide a seamless interactive platform for virtual and augmented reality scenarios. The researchers have published their results in the scientific journal Nature Communications (DOI: 10.1038/s41467-019-12303-5).

Tomorrow's coolants of choice

Press Release of 16.09.2019

Later during this century, around 2060, a paradigm shift in global energy consumption is expected: we will spend more energy for cooling than for heating. Meanwhile, the increasing penetration of cooling applications into our daily lives causes a rapidly growing ecological footprint. New refrigeration processes such as magnetic cooling could limit the resulting impact on the climate and the environment. Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the Technische Universität Darmstadt have taken a closer look at today's most promising materials. The result of their work is the first systematic magnetocaloric material library with all relevant property data, which they have published now in the journal Advanced Energy Materials.

An astonishing parabola trick

Press Release of 03.09.2019

Prospective digital data storage devices predominantly rely on novel fundamental magnetic phenomena. The better we understand these phenomena, the better and more energy efficient the memory chips and hard drives we can build. Physicists from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) have now completed the essential fundamental work for future storage devices: Using a creative approach of shaping magnetic thin films in curved architectures, they validated the presence of chiral responses in a commonly used magnetic material. This facilitates the creation of magnetic systems with desired properties that rely on simple geometrical transformations. The team has now presented their work in the journal “Physical Review Letters” (DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.123.077201).

A laser for penetrating waves

Press Release of 16.08.2019

The "Landau-level laser" is an exciting concept for an unusual radiation source. It has the potential to efficiently generate so-called terahertz waves, which can be used to penetrate materials as well as for future data transmission. So far, however, nearly all attempts to make such a laser reality have failed. An international team of researchers has now taken an important step in the right direction: In the journal Nature Photonics (DOI: 10.1038/s41566-019-0496-1), they describe a material that generates terahertz waves by simply applying an electric current. Physicists from the German research center Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) played a significant role in this project.

Stardust in the Antarctic

News of 13.08.2019

Every year, several thousand to tens of thousands of tons of cosmic dust shower down on Earth. Most of these tiny particles come from asteroids and comets in our solar system. A small proportion, however, comes from remote stars. The iron-60 isotope contained in these particles is particularly interesting. Natural sources of this isotope do not exist on Earth. On the other hand, exploding stars, so-called supernovae, emit large quantities of iron-60. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), in collaboration with colleagues at two Helmholtz Centers, have now discovered iron-60 in the Antarctic for the first time. They have been able to draw spectacular conclusions from their findings.

Icy Giant Planets in the Laboratory

Press Release of 25.03.2019

Giant planets like Uranus and Neptune may contain much less free hydrogen than previously assumed. Researchers from the German Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) drove shock waves through two different types of plastic to reach the same temperatures and pressures present inside such planets, and observed the behavior using ultra-strong X-ray laser pulses. Unexpectedly, one of these plastics kept its crystalline structure even at the most extreme pressures reached. Since the icy giant interiors are made up of the same components as the plastic, planetary models may need to be partially reconsidered, as reported in the journal Scientific Reports (doi: 10.1038/s41598-019040782-5).

Reducing water consumption in mining

Press Release of 21.03.2019

Water is a vital resource on which many industries rely and which can be used more sparingly. An example is the beneficiation of mineral ores. Taking the raw material fluorite as their example, researchers at Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) have now shown how water usage can be optimized. They have developed a new procedure that extends the simulation of the beneficiation process. It indicates the circumstances in which it makes sense for water to be recycled without incurring losses during ore enrichment. The consumption of fresh water can thereby be significantly reduced. This not only benefits the environment but also the mining companies, because it makes the extraction of raw materials more efficient. The researchers have presented their new procedure in the Journal of Environmental Management (DOI: 10.1016/j.jenvman.2018.11.139). HIF is part of HZDR and works in close collaboration with TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

A new spin in nano-electronics

Press Release of 25.02.2019

In recent years, electronic data processing has been evolving in one direction only: The industry has downsized its components to the nanometer range. But this process is now reaching its physical limits. Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) are therefore exploring spin waves or so-called magnons – a promising alternative for transporting information in more compact microchips. Cooperating with international partners, they have successfully generated and controlled extremely short-wavelength spin waves. The physicists achieved this feat by harnessing a natural magnetic phenomenon, as they explain in the journal Nature Nanotechnology (DOI: 10.1038/s41565-019-0383-4).

Wie der Teilchenstrahl seine Struktur bekommt

Press Release of 24.01.2019
