An X-ray view of carbon: New measurement method promises spectacular insights into the interior of planets

Press Release of 05.10.2021

At the heart of planets, extreme states are to be found: temperatures of thousands of degrees, pressures a million times greater than atmospheric pressure. They can therefore only be explored directly to a limited extent – which is why the expert community is trying to use sophisticated experiments to recreate equivalent extreme conditions. An international research team including the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) has adapted an established measurement method to these extreme conditions and tested it successfully: Using the light flashes of the world’s strongest X-ray laser the team managed to take a closer look at the important element, carbon, along with its chemical properties. As reported in the journal Physics of Plasmas (DOI: 10.1063/5.0048150), the method now has the potential to deliver new insights into the interior of planets both within and outside of our solar system.

Antimatter from laser pincers

Press Release of 22.07.2021

In the depths of space, there are celestial bodies where extreme conditions prevail: Rapidly rotating neutron stars generate super-strong magnetic fields. And black holes, with their enormous gravitational pull, can cause huge, energetic jets of matter to shoot out into space. An international physics team with the participation of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) has now proposed a new concept that could allow some of these extreme processes to be studied in the laboratory in the future: A special setup of two high-intensity laser beams could create conditions similar to those found near neutron stars. In the discovered process, an antimatter jet is generated and accelerated very efficiently. The experts present their concept in the journal Communications Physics (DOI: 10.1038/s42005-021-00636-x).

Ingeniously Two-Dimensional: Efficiently doping the semiconductors of tomorrow

Press Release of 22.06.2021

Electronics of the future are inconceivable without two-dimensional materials. They are the great hope for high-performance and energy-efficient electronic components. At the same time, however, the unique properties of two-dimensional materials make it difficult to dope them with foreign atoms. This step is necessary to precisely adjust the electrical conductivity and to transform the material into a p- or n-type semiconductor. A team led by Dr. Slawomir Prucnal from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) with the help of Dr. Arkady Krasheninnikov’s research group at HZDR and Prof. Dietrich Zahn from the TU Chemnitz have now achieved a breakthrough, as the researchers in the scientific journal Nanoscale (DOI: 10.1039/D0NR08935D) report. The cover layer they use makes it possible to process the new materials with methods already established for conventional semiconductors. This is a huge step on the path from the laboratory to industrial manufacturing.

A new project by the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY, Hamburg), the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS, Görlitz) at the HZDR, is testing an approach with which data on physical systems behavior can be generated more quickly using neural networks. The “SynRap” project was selected for funding through a competitive process. The fifteen winning teams are to receive a total of 6.2 million euros over the next few years to carry out their projects through the Helmholtz Association’s Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit Helmholtz AI.

The Sun’s Clock

Press Release of 11.06.2021

Not only the very concise 11-year cycle, but also all other periodic solar activity fluctuations can be clocked by planetary attractive forces. This is the conclusion drawn by Dr. Frank Stefani and his colleagues from the Institute of Fluid Dynamics at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and from the Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics in Perm, Russia. With new model calculations, they are proposing a comprehensive explanation of all important known sun cycles for the first time. They also reveal the longest fluctuations in activity over thousands of years as a chaotic process. Despite the planetary timing of short and medium cycles, long-term forecasts of solar activity thus become impossible, as the researchers in the scientific journal Solar Physics (DOI: 10.1007/s11207-021-01822-4) assert.

An important step towards live imaging in proton therapy

Press Release of 19.04.2021

Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) want to build the world’s first prototype that tracks moving tumors with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in real time during proton therapy. They are combining a rotating open MRI device, designed for the LINAC-MR system from Alberta Health Services, with an actively scanned clinical-akin proton beam at OncoRay, the Dresden-based National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology. The rotating MRI device is produced by ASG Superconductors, using their helium-free superconducting magnesium diboride (MgB2) magnet. Real-time MRI would make it possible to synchronize the proton beam to tumor motion during radiation dose delivery. So far, this has been impossible and therefore was a limiting factor for treating moving tumors with this promising cancer therapy.

Alles unter Kontrolle: Forschungsteam demonstriert Steuermechanismus für Zukunftsmaterial Graphen

Press Release of 08.04.2021

Harnessing the power of AI to understand warm dense matter

Press Release of 28.01.2021

The study of warm dense matter helps us understand what is going on inside giant planets, brown dwarfs, and neutron stars. However, this state of matter, which exhibits properties of both solids and plasmas, does not occur naturally on Earth. It can be produced artificially in the lab using large X-ray experiments, albeit only at a small scale and for short periods of time. Theoretical and numerical models are essential to evaluate these experiments, which are impossible to interpret without formulas, algorithms, and simulations. Scientists at the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS) at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) have now developed a method to evaluate such experiments more effectively and faster than before.
