HESEB colloquium
The next HESEB lecture within the frame of the HESEB colloquium took place as an online event on December 15th, 2020.
The lecture was be given by Dr. Florian Kronast from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie.
The title of the lecture is "XPEEM: Magnetic Imaging and Spectroscopy at the Nanoscale".
Due to the ongoing pandemics we will be obliged to have an online meeting.

First scientific workshop on soft x-rays research
The workshop initially scheduled in Istanbul in spring 2020 had to be postponed due to the spread of the corona virus (COVID 19). At present, it is anticipated to hold in spring 2021. Exact dates will be provided as soon as the situation has become more predictable.
Context
The history of SESAME
The research centre SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East, www.sesame.org.jo) near Amman/Jordan was officially founded in 2004 as an international research project under the auspices of UNESCO with multilateral cooperation of countries of the Middle East region (Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, Palestine, Turkey). It was the idea and tireless commitment of Herman Winick (SLAC), Gustav-Adolf Voss (DESY) and Herwig Schopper (CERN) which eventually lead to the foundation and build-up of a research facility in the Middle East – with the vision that close scientific cooperation would make a contribution to peace and stability in this region.
Scope of the project
The five Helmholtz centres DESY, FZJ, HZB, HZDR and KITjoined forces to build at SESAME a new and state-of-the-art Helmholtz-SESAME soft X-ray beamline (HESEB) in the soft X-ray range to be used for a large number of top-class scientific applications and to create new cooperation potentials with German and international research groups. Corresponding training, education and support measures offered by the participating Helmholtz centres shall guarantee the international scientific attractiveness and quality of the beamline as well as secure its long-term scientific use and excellence by creating and supporting scientific user communities within the region and by building up and connecting long-lasting cooperation among the SESAME members and with other user groups worldwide.
User support, cooperation development, Seed Projects / Teaming
To secure a large and sustainable request for scientific use of the soft X-rays from the Helmholtz SESAME beamline, dedicated workshops and schools are being offered in order to build up a strong user community in the SESAME region in the medium and long term. In addition, grants for several months of training or research stays of future SESAME users at adequate synchrotron radiation sources and research centres in Germany will be offered.
Twinning Programme
As part of the HESEB Project, a Twinning Programme is offered, whose main aim is to support the user community from SESAME members in gaining knowledge and experience with soft X-ray synchrotron use during a joint beamtime with an experienced user group at a Helmholtz synchrotron.
As twinning guest:
We invite you to participate in a beamtime of an experienced user group in your research field at a soft X-ray beamline of a German synchrotron. You will be involved in the experiment preparation, in the beamtime itself and in data analysis and interpretation. You will be able to discuss with the experienced user team, to ask questions and to learn a lot for your own projects. When later applying for your own beamtime you may again contact your mentors, asking for support in proposal preparation. If beamtime will be granted, in some cases your twinning host might even join As twinning guest, you will profit of free access to the facility at which the beamtime takes place and your travel and accommodation costs will be covered. |
As twinning host:
As twinning host, the cost for travel and accommodation related to the beamtime during which you host the guest will be covered for one of your team members. In some cases, a fruitful collaboration will arise from this joint beamtime and you will join your former guest during his or her beamtime.
