The Helmholtz AI group “AI in Future Photon Science” invites applications as PhD Student (m/f/d) in Machine Learning
The Institute of Radiation Physics conducts fundamental research on novel Plasma-based particle accelerators in theory and experiment. The comprehension of the involved physics requires sophisticated methods for fast simulation of theoretical models as well as reconstruction of experimental diagnostics (e.g. X-ray imaging or radiation spectra). Our institute is hosting a Helmholtz AI Young Investigators Group for "AI in Future Photon Science" which is tackling these challenges, i.e. surrogate modelling, PDE learning as well as image reconstruction, by Physics-informed (invertible) neural networks. This implies that we are jointly working on compression of imaging data, uncertainty quantification, resolving ambiguous mappings as well as applied mathematics.
You will be working in an interdisciplinary team of machine learning researchers, data scientists as well as domain scientists in areas ranging from computer science to astrophysics & radiation physics. You will become part of our local Helmholtz AI initiative offering knowledge transfer & stimulating discussions with a growing number of machine learning enthusiasts. Our HZDR-wide "ML clinic" as well as social events (hackathons, paper reading groups, etc.) are certainly open to you, too.
The position will be available from 01.10.2020. The employment contract is limited to three years.
- application and research of machine learning algorithms to either approximate large-scale numerical simulations by surrogate models/neural solvers, or analysis of multi-modal data (e.g. X-ray scattering data, radiation spectra)
- publishing papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals
- presentation of research results at scientific meetings
- actively collaborating with industry, academia, government labs, and applications developers in a variety of venues
- major in Computer Science, (Applied) Mathematics, Computational Physics, or a related discipline
- good mathematical background
- excellent programming skills in Python
- strong communication skills in a professional context (presentation of results, colloquial discussions, ...)
- proven experience in Machine Learning would be desirable
