Projects of the liquid metal battery research group

Experimental modeling of magnetic field-induced interfacial instabilities in electrolysis cells and liquid metal batteries (ENMAG)

Within the project ENMAG experiments and simulations are performed in order to better understand interface instabilities in Hall-Héroult cells for aluminium production and in liquid metal batteries.

  • Project duration: 03/2023 - 02/2026
  • Funding authority: German Research Foundation (DFG)
  • Funding amount: 242 000 €
  • Principal investigator: Gerrit Horstmann
  • Further information: DFG Website

SOLSTICE

Within the Horizon 2020 project SOLSTICE, which is coordinated by HZDR, molten salt batteries based on Na and Zn metal are developed and operated.

Modelling of mass transfer and electrode kinetics in liquid metal batteries

In frame of the DFG project, solutal and thermal convection as well as electrode reactions in liquid metal batteries have been modelled in order to improve their efficiency.

  • Project duration: 10/2017 - 02/2020
  • Funding authority: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
  • Funding amount: 208 000 €
  • Principal investigator: Norbert Weber
  • Further information: DFG Website

Alkali-Metal-Thermo-Electric-Converter - Typ Dresden (AMTEC-D)

In the project AMTEC-D a liquid metal converter has been developed to convert thermal to electric energy.

  • Project duration: 04/2017 - 06/2021
  • Funding authority: Europäischer Fonds für Regionale Entwicklung
  • Funding amount: 259 200 €
  • Principal investigator: Tom Weier
