ATAS-AnXAS, a workshop on actinide research using synchrotron facilities, took place at the ESRF 17 to 21 Oct 2022, gathering 92 participants from 12 countries.

ESRF and HZDR jointly organized this workshop, which was initiated by the Rossendorf Beamline at ESRF in 1998, travelled then to the US, Germany, France, Japan, Switzerland and UK, before coming now back to the ESRF. More than 90 participants, from Europe, the US and from Japan, gathered for a program of 52 talks and 16 posters. Sessions on Radioactive Waste Disposal, Bio-Geochemistry, Nuclear Materials, Emerging Techniques, Aqueous & Coordination Chemistry and Electronic Structure of actinides presented the current state of the art in these fields; in addition, facility reports provided a comprehensive overview on synchrotron beamlines able to perform actinide research. On the last day, 8 beamlines (BM20, ID12, ID20, BM23, ID26, ID27, ID28 and ID32) were visited.

The workshop was well received by all participants and was a great success. The scientific community expressed a strong interest and excitement in the continuation of this series of workshops, with a more frequent biannual pattern. The next workshop will hence take place 2024, at ALS and Lawrence Berkeley Lab.

New ROBL team members

During the summer, our team grew substantially. Damien Prieur (2nd from right) joined us in August to increase our manpower during x-ray absorption and diffraction experiments, and to provide his expertise in the solid state chemistry of nuclear materials. Damien Naudet (3rd from right) joined us in October as software and electronics engineer. And we also have again PhD students, Manuel Feig (center) and Jurij Galanzew (2nd from left), who started already in July. Another four new people will join us early next year as part of Kristina's ERC team.

Kristina made it! She got the prestigious ERC grant for her proposal "TOP: Towards the Bottom of the Periodic Table" to be able to study the electronic structure of lanthanide and actinide nanoparticles. Congratulations, Kristina!

Start of the upgrade to ROBL-II

ROBL-II hutch structure and experiments

Based on an investment of 4 Mio EUR by HZDR, ROBL will massively upgrade its experimental stations in order to offer a wide portfolio of techniques for actinide and environmental research. The figure left shows the new building structure with two linked alpha-laboratories hosting four different experiments (bulk-EXAFS, high-resolution absorption and emission spectroscopy, surface diffraction and RAXR, single-crystal and powder diffraction). The new techniques will be available from 2017 on, and the full functionality of RCH-II as alpha-lab from 2020 on, together with the new superbend source of ESRF-II.

The state minister for Sciences and Art in Saxony, Sabine von Schorlemer, visited ROBL and signed the new contract between the ESRF and HZDR on the operation of ROBL, in presence of the director general of the ESRF, Francesco Sette, the administrative director of HZDR, Peter Joehnk, the president of the Rhone-Alpes region, and the mayor of the city of Grenoble.
