Enhanced flux pinning isotropy by tuned nanosized defect network in superconducting YBa2Cu3O6+x films

Striving to improve the critical current density Jc of superconducting YBa 2 Cu 3 o 6+x (YBCO) thin films via enhanced vortex pinning, the interplay between film growth mechanisms and the formation of nanosized defects, both natural and artificial, is systematically studied in undoped and BaZrO 3 (BZO)-doped YBCO thin films. The films were grown via pulsed laser deposition (PLD), varying the crystal grain size of the targets in addition to the dopant content. The microstructure of the PLD target has been observed to have a great impact on that of the deposited thin films, including the formation of vortex pinning centers, which has direct implications on the superconducting performance, especially on the isotropy of flux pinning properties. Based on experimentally measured angular dependencies of Jc, coupled with a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of flux pinning in the YBCO films, we present a quantitative model of how the splay and fragmentation of BZO nanorods artifically introduced into the YBCO film matrix explain the majority of the observed critical current anisotropy. To obtain the freedom to engineer future high-temperature superconductor (HTS) applications for desired operating magnetic field and temperature ranges, it is necessary to optimize the vortex pinning landscape for an enhanced, isotropic flux pinning performance 1-6. In addition to naturally formed crystalline defects, which typically have spatial dimensions distinctly below the superconducting coherence length, defect-engineering with artificially produced pinning centers (APCs) with dimensionalities of 1D-3D have been observed to be extremely effective 7-10. However, the complex nucleation process of YBCO during PLD process, that leads to growth island size variation, and the manner in which this could affect the size and distribution of the nanoscale structural defects is chiefly neglected. Especially, a clear gap exists in the current literature regarding how ordered arrays of nanoscale defects can also influence and regulate the distribution and growth of more effective APCs and thus decrease the anisotropy by allowing vortices to be trapped in a wider angular range 11. Partly, the clear lack of information on the subject is arguably be due to the rather general assumption that during PLD process, the film growth method of our choice, the target material is largely decomposed on the atomic level, and thus its properties should not have an effect on the formation and nucleation of particles on the substrate surface. This assumption, which our studies have led us to challenge, would precariously force one to downplay the potential importance of target microstructure on the functional properties of derived films. The angular dependence of the J c has an excellent physical importance providing an approach to the problem of flux pinning and vortex dynamics anisotropy in HTSs, both from the experimental and theoretical point of view. For instance, in the angular dependent critical current plots, one can easily observe how the various types of pinning centers such as correlated linear, columnar or planar defects and, on the other hand, defects based on growth mechanisms together with YBCO's intrinsic pinning can dramatically alter the angular dependence of J c (B) 4. For understanding the origin of angular dependent flux pinning J c (θ), experimental tools like transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are often exploited to probe the structural properties and features, such as the defects naturally formed during the film growth, as well as the size, shape, orientation and distribution of the artificially produced and self-assembled pinning centers 5,12,13. Vacancy complexes in nonequilibrium germanium-tin semiconductors

Depth-profiled pulsed low-energy positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and Doppler broadening spectroscopy were combined to identify vacancy-related complexes and probe their evolution as a function of Sn content in GeSn epitaxial layers. Regardless of the Sn content in the 6.5-13.0 at.% range, all GeSn samples showed the same depth-dependent increase in the positron annihilation line broadening parameters, relative to that of epitaxial and bulk Ge references thus confirming the formation of open volume defects during growth. The measured average positron lifetimes were found to be the highest (380-395 ps) in the region near the surface and monotonically decrease across the analyzed thickness, but remain above 350 ps. All GeSn layers exhibit average lifetimes that are 20 to 160 ps higher than those recorded for the Ge reference. Surprisingly, these lifetimes were found to decrease as Sn content increases in GeSn layers. These measurements indicate that divacancies are the dominant defect in the as-grown GeSn layers. However, their corresponding lifetime was found to be shorter than in epitaxial Ge thus suggesting that the presence of Sn may alter the structure of divacancies. Additionally, GeSn layers were found to also contain a small fraction of vacancy clusters, which become less important as Sn concentration increases. The interaction and possible pairing between Sn and vacancies have been proposed to explain the reduced formation of larger vacancy clusters in GeSn when Sn content increases.


Flexible IGZO TFTs and their Suitability for Space Applications

In this paper, Low Earth Orbit radiation, temperature and magnetic field conditions are mimicked to investigate the suitability of flexible Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide transistors for lightweight space wearables. Such wearable devices could be incorporated into spacesuits as unobtrusive radiation detectors or physiological monitors. Due to the harsh environment to which these space wearables would be exposed, they have to be able to withstand high radiation doses, low temperatures and magnetic fields. For this reason, the impacts of high energetic electron irradiation with fluences up to 1E12 e−/cm2, low operating temperatures down to 78K and magnetic fields up to 11mT are investigated. This simulates 278 h in Low Earth Orbit. The threshold voltage and mobility of transistors that were exposed to e- irradiation are found to shift by +(0.09 +- 0.05)V and (0.6 +- 0.5) cm 2 V−1 s−1. Subsequent low temperature exposure resulted in additional shifts of +0.38V and -5.95 cm2 V−1 s−1 for the same parameters. These values are larger than the ones obtained from non irradiated reference samples. In addition, the performance of the devices was observed not to be significantly affected by the magnetic fields. Finally, a Cascode amplifier presenting a voltage gain of 10.3 dB and a cutoff frequency of 1.2 kHz is demonstrated after the sample had been irradiate, cooled down and exposed to the magnetic fields. If these notions are considered during the systems’ design, these devices can be used to unobtrusively integrate sensor systems into space suits.


Formation of heavy clusters in ion-irradiated compounds

Ion-irradiated U(Al,Si)3 intermetallide, as an example of compounds with significantly different atomic masses of constituting atoms, was studied by slow positron beam spectroscopy in order to clarify the nature of defects accompanying the process of the ion-induced disordering of this material. The studied compound was irradiated with different Ar+ ion fluences with energy 30 keV. The formation of so-called heavy clusters (Uranium in this case) has been revealed. Such clusters affect the reliability of materials in nuclear reactors. Ion-induced creation of heavy clusters can provide important properties of similar materials.


Vacancy cluster in ZnO films grown by pulsed laser deposition

Undoped and Ga-doped ZnO films were grown on c-sapphire using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at the substrate temperature of 600 oC. Positron annihilation spectroscopy study (PAS) shows that the dominant VZn-related defect in the as-grown undoped ZnO grown with relative low oxygen pressure P(O2) is a vacancy cluster (most likely a VZn-nVO complex with n=2, 3) rather than the isolated VZn which has a lower formation energy. Annealing these samples at 900oC induces out-diffusion of Zn from the ZnO film into the sapphire creating the VZn, which favors the formation
of vacancy cluster containing relatively more VZn. Increasing the P(O2) during growth also lead to the formation of the vacancy cluster with relatively more VZn. For Ga-doped ZnO films, the oxygen pressure during growth has significant influence on the electron concentration and the microstructure of the VZn-related defect. Green luminescence (GL) and yellow luminescence (YL) were identified in the cathodoluminescence study (CL) study, and both emission bands were quenched after hydrogen plasma treatment.


On defects role in enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Pt/Co/Pt, induced by ion irradiation

Modifications of magnetic and magneto-optical properties of Pt/Co(dCo)/Pt upon Ar+ irradiation (with energy 1.2, 5 and 30 keV) and fluence, F at the range from 2e13-2e16 Ar+/cm^2) were studied. Two ‘branches’ of increased perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and enhanced magneto-optical response are found on two-dimensional (dCo, F) diagrams. The difference in F between ‘branches’ is driven by ion energy. Structural features correlated with magnetic properties have been analysed thoroughly by X-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and positron annihilation spectroscopy. Experimental results are in agreement with TRIDYN numerical calculations of irradiation-induced layers intermixing. Our work discusses particularly structural factors related to crystal lattice defects and strain, created and modified by irradiation, co-responsible for the increase in PMA.


The role of open-volume defects in the annihilation of antisites in a B2-ordered alloy

The atomic arrangement in certain B2-ordered alloys, such as Fe60Al40, determines intrinsic material properties like magnetism. Here we have investigated the influence of open-volume defects on the atomic ordering process at elevated temperatures in Fe60Al40 thin films. A dependence of the ordering process on the type and concentration of defects is observed by positron annihilation spectroscopy combined with ab-initio calculations. Comparing the lifetimes of positrons in the alloy for different annealing and irradiation treatments reveals the role of mono-vacancies, triple defects as well as large vacancy clusters: The rate of atomic ordering to the ordered B2 state is increased in the presence of mono-vacancies whereas triple defects and vacancy complexes decrease the ordering rate. Furthermore, an agglomeration of vacancies during annealing to di-vacancies and larger vacancy clusters is observed. The distribution of open-volume defects can be modified in such a way as to control the thermal stability via ion-irradiation and thermal pre-treatments.
