Technical Details

The Rossendorf Beamline consists of two experimental stations: Radiochemistry Hutch 1 (RCH-I) and the former Materials Research Hutch (MRH) now being rebuilt as RCH-II. RCH-I hosts the dedicated X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiment, and RCH-II the X-ray diffraction and emission spectroscopy experiments. The optics provide the monochromatic (in the 3 to 35 keV range), collimated or focused beam for all experiments. Hence only one experiment can be conducted at the same time. The optics have been rebuilt in 2011/2012 to provide both a high flux at high and medium energy resolution (for diffraction) and a high flux over a wide energy range with high energy resolution (for XAFS spectroscopy).
Between 2016 and 2020 the HZDR is investing about four Mio. Euro to convert and expand the portfolio of technical possibilities as part of a major strategic reorganization. The new techniques will be available from 2017 on. Full functionality of RCH-II as alpha-lab will be implemented, together with the new superbend source of ESRF-II, in 2020.

Beamline Layout

The Rossendorf beamline as a unique synchrotron X-ray toolbox for actinide and nuclear waste disposal research consists of two linked alpha-laboratories hosting four different experimental setups. RCH I and RCH II are being run in alternating operation.
