PhD Student (m/f/d)

A member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,200 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health, and matter.

The Institute of Resource Ecology (IRE) performs research to protect humans and the environment from hazards caused by pollutants resulting from technical processes that produce energy and raw materials.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Surface Processes invites applications as PhD Student (m/f/d).

The position will be available, subject to the consent of the funding agency, as soon as possible. The employment contract is limited until 31 May 2022.


  • radioanalytical characterizations of concrete samples
  • radionuclide (RN) leaching experimments under varied environmental parameters
  • spectroscopic determinations of RN speciation in solid phases and in leachates
  • characterization of the stability of RN binding in concrete, including dissolution kinetics
  • identification of disposal parameters that enhance RN mobility
  • publication and presentations of research results at conferences and in international journals with peer review


  • Master or Diploma in chemistry, environmental science or geoscience with very good marks
  • good knowledge on thermodynamics, analytical and spectroscopic methods
  • willingness to work with radionuclides, experimental skills
  • interest in applied research and interdisciplinary cooperation in the context of understanding the incorporation of radionuclides in construction materials
  • personal commitment, ability to work in a team
  • very good written and oral communication skills in English
