PhD Student (f/m/d)

As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,200 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.

The Institute of Resource Ecology invites applications as PhD student (f/m/d). One position will be available from 01.02.2021. The employment contract is limited to three years.

Tasks:

The position is part of a national joint project dealing with geochemical retention of radionuclides on cement alteration phases (GRaZ II).

The focus is on the following fields of work:

  • Investigation of the influence of organic ligands on the retention of radionuclides relevant to repositories in systems with cement phases as well as clay minerals and natural clay rock under hyperalkaline conditions

  • Identification of the formed species by spectroscopic methods

  • Derivation of corresponding thermodynamic data and application in (geo )chemical modelling

  • Publication of results in international journals and at conferences

  • Preparation of a PhD thesis

Requirements:

  • very good university degree (Diploma/Master) in the field of chemistry or environmental sciences

  • knowledge of a broad spectrum of analytical and spectroscopic methods

  • personal commitment, ability to work in a team, good experimental skills

  • interest in applied research and interdisciplinary cooperation in the context of a safe final disposal of radioactive waste

  • very good English language skills

  • The willingness to handle radioactive samples is required
