PhD candidate/researcher (f/m/d): Developing new concepts for the efficient extraction of critical metals from an Fe-Zn-(Ag)-(Cu) skarn deposit, Kalimantan, Indonesia

The Department of Analytics is looking for a PhD candidate/researcher (f/m/d) interested in developing new concepts for exploration and the efficient extraction of critical metals from an Fe Zn-(Ag)-(Cu) skarn deposit, Indonesia. The position will start on 01 April 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter, and will run for 3 years and will be remunerated according to grade E13 of the German Collective Wage Agreement for the Civil Service (TVÖD), commensurate with professional experience. In the first year, this will be a 50% position, with the possibility to increase to 75% in the second year, and 100% in the third year.
Scope of your job
This position is part of a larger international consortium project financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and coordinated by the Helmholtz-Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (Helmholtz-Center Dresden-Rossendorf). The goal of this project is to investigate the mineralogy and geochemistry of Indonesian ore deposits (Fe-Ni-laterite, polymetallic skarns, orthomagmatic Cu-Ni-PGE) in order to improve the exploration and extraction efficiency.Your main task will be to conduct a detailed geometallurgical sampling and characterization campaign on a polymetallic skarn, Kalimantan, indonesia, integrate the collected data, and use it to develop new concepts for the beneficiation and exploration of critical metal-rich ores. In the final stages of the project, these concepts will be tested by targeted processing tests and research drillings.
Planning and conducting a sampling campaign to collect representative samples from the deposit
Sample characterization by a combination of different methods, including: whole rock geochemistry, optical microscopy, XRD, H-XRF, MLA/QEMScan, EPMA and LA-ICP-MS
Data evaluation and integration
Development of new exploration and beneficiation concepts for the deposit using the collected data set
Planning and supervision of research drillings and minerals processing test work to verify the developed concepts
MSc Degree in economic geology or a closely related field
Proficiency in relevant analytical methods (Raman spectroscopy, MLA/QEMScan, EPMA, LA-ICP-MS)
Willingness and physical fitness to do fieldwork in a tropical climate
Strong motivation to work in a collaborative research environment
