PhD student (f/m/d) in the field of oxygen bubble investigation

As member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.

The Institute of Fluid Dynamics is conducting basic and applied research in the fields of thermo-fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics in order to improve the sustainability, the energy efficiency and the safety of industrial processes.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Transport processes at interfaces invites applications as

PhD student (f/m/d) in the field of oxygen bubble investigation.

The position will be available from the earliest starting date subject to the project approval.

Tasks:

  • construction and set-up of a Hele Shaw type cell for flexible investigation of nucleation, growth and detachment of O2 bubbles in overflowed, additively manufactured and surface functionalized plates

  • collaboration in the development of suitable surface functionalizations by means of low-pressure plasmas

  • quantitative optical characterization of the number of nucleation sites of oxygen bubbles, their growth dynamics and detachment rate for different surface functions and flow conditions

  • installation of differently flowed, functionalized plates ("baffles") for the development of efficient bubble separators

  • investigation of bubble coalescence at these baffles on the flowed side and in the wake using high-speed cameras

Requirements:

  • above-average university degree in mechanical engineering, process engineering, chemistry or physics

  • very good knowledge in fluid mechanics, optical metrology and surface functionalization is an advantage

  • ability to cooperate on an interdisciplinary basis and to work with international partners

  • independent, structured and target-oriented working style
