Research assistant / PhD (f/m/d) for the development of a geometallurgical Model of a Kupferschiefer (Cu-Ag) deposit

The aim of the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technologies (HIF) is to develop innovative technologies for the raw materials sector to make available primary and secondary metallic and mineral resources more efficiently and work on solutions to enable a sustainable circular economy.

Research assistant / PhD (f/m/d) for the development of a geometallurgical Model of a Kupferschiefer (Cu-Ag) deposit

The position will be available from 01.08.2021. The employment contract is limited to 3 years.

This position is part of an industry funded research project conducted in close collaboration with KSL Kupferschiefer Lausitz GmbH, the current holder of the exploration and exploitation license for the Spremberg-Graustein-Schleife Cu-Ag deposit. The main goal of the project is to develop a geometallurgical model which can be used for the planning of further exploration and exploitation activities.

Within the scope of this position, you will use geostatistical modelling combined with targeted sampling and detailed ore characterization to develop a resource model (block model) which includes information about relevant ore properties for exploitation and beneficiation. 

Tasks:

  • Evaluation of existing geochemical resource models and delineation of a geochemical/geological domain structure of the deposit using available data

  • Planning and execution of a sampling campaign on existing and new drill-core based on the identified domain structure

  • Detailed quantitative characterization of ore mineralogy, geochemistry, and texture using suitable methods (XRD, XRF, µ-XRF, SEM, MLA/QEMScan, EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, maybe hyperspectral core scanning)

  • Integration of new characterization data with existing geochemical and geological datasets to develop a geometallurgical deposit model

  • Development of strategies for further exploration work, feasibility studies, and mine planning using the final model

Requirements:

  • Completed university degree (Master’s level) in geosciences or a closely related field (e.g., geology, mineralogy, minerals processing, geomathematics)

  • Previous experience with relevant analytical methods, particularly electron beam analytics (SEM, EPMA), XRD/XRF and LA-ICP-MS

  • Previous experience or willingness to learn data analysis and geostatistical modelling with the R software, or equivalent

  • Willingness to undertake field work

  • Strong motivation to work in a collaborative research environment

  • Excellent communication skills in English in a professional context (presentation of research results at scientific meetings, writing of manuscripts, discussions with colleagues)

  • Previous knowledge or experience in economic geology are of advantage
