Professional Support (f/m/d) Machine Learning and Data Science

As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Center's focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health and matter.

The Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS) is a German-Polish research center for data-intensive digital systems research. CASUS was founded in 2019 in Görlitz and conducts digital interdisciplinary systems research in various fields such as earth systems research, systems biology and materials research.

CASUS invites applications, subject to project approval, as Professional Support (f/m/d) Machine Learning and Data Science.

The position will be available from 1 January 2022. The employment contract is limited to two years.


  • Support the CASUS research areas in tasks related to machine learning and data science

  • Develop machine-learning infrastructures and workflows for science applications in the CASUS research domains

  • Collaborate with research teams on scientific problems that need machine-learning and data-science support

  • Contribute to research publications in academic, peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with research teams

  • Communicate your scientific results at academic venues


  • B.Sc. in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related subject

  • Solid background in mathematics and statistics

  • Expertise in machine learning and related statistical methods

  • Experience with modern software languages (Python, C/C++, or Julia)

  • Strong motivation to work in a collaborative environment

  • Excellent communication skills in a professional context

  • Desired Qualifications:
    • Familiarity with natural language and image processing

    • Experience with statistical data science methods (R)

    • Experience with databases (SQL)

    • Experience in distributed version control (SVN/Git)
