Head (f/m/d) of the CASUS Professional Support Team

The Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS) is a German-Polish research center for data-intensive digital systems research. We combine innovative methods from mathematics, theoretical systems research, simulations, data science, and computer science to provide solutions for a range of disciplines – materials science under ambient and extreme conditions, earth system research, systems biology, and autonomous vehicles.

CASUS was jointly founded in August 2019 by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, the Technical University of Dresden and the University of Wroclaw. CASUS is located in the heart of Görlitz at the border between Germany and Poland. The CASUS start-up phase is hosted by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Saxon State Ministry of Science and Art.

The CASUS invites applications as Head (f/m/d) of the CASUS Professional Support Team.

The position will be available as soon as possible. The employment contract is limited to two years.

The Scope of Your Job

CASUS is seeking an outstanding candidate (f/m/d) for heading the CASUS Professional Support team, a high-level support team of scientific research software engineers (f/m/d). The CASUS Professional Support team works together with scientists (f/m/d) from the CASUS Research Teams, data scientists (f/m/d), computer scientists (f/m/d), software engineers (f/m/d) and external collaborators (f/m/d) on the co-development, maintenance and transfer of scientific research software.

The candidate (f/m/d) will be responsible for strategically building up the CASUS Professional Support team in consultation with the CASUS Directorate the CASUS Research Team Leaders (f/m/d) and will aso be responsible for leading the team, coordinating its daily work and strategically allocating the team’s resources according to the needs of the CASUS scientific program. The candidate (f/m/d) is expected to work together with the CASUS Research Team Leaders (f/m/d) and CASUS Directorate (f/m/d) in an open and collaborative way, with a focus on supporting CASUS research software co-development together with CASUS scientists (f/m/d), as well as maintenance, reuse, transfer and application support of CASUS research software solutions.

Your tasks:

  • Built-up and lead the CASUS Professional Support Team of research software engineers (f/m/d)
  • Allocate the teams resources according to the needs of the CASUS scientific program in consultation with the CASUS Research Team Leaders (f/m/d) and CASUS Directorate (f/m/d)
  • Motivate and guide the CASUS Professional Support team to work with CASUS scientists (f/m/d) on co-development of scientific research software in an open, respectful and supportive way
  • Set up and execute a strategy of applying, maintaining, reusing and transferring CASUS research software solutions
  • Develop and apply instruments for teaching, knowledge transfer and support for research software and software engineering

Your profile:

  • Excellent PhD degree and scientific track record in Computer Science, Computational Physics or an equivalent field of science
  • At least three years of work experience after the PhD, preferably within a scientific context
  • Proven track record of leading a team
  • At least three years experience in research software engineering
  • Excellent communication skills in English and in a professional context (presentation of results at meetings, colloquial discussions, writing of manuscripts)
  • Experience in developing and applying research software in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Experience in supporting and teaching professional research software use and development
  • Preferably experience in at least one or more of the following areas
    • High performance computing and parallel programming
    • Machine learning and artificial intelligence

    • Visualization, visual and data analytics
    • Human-machine interfaces
