PhD student (f/m/d) in Process Metallurgy

At the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), innovative technologies for the circular economy are developed to provide and use mineral and metal-bearing raw materials more efficiently and to recycle them in an environmentally friendly way.

As part of the Institute, the Department of Process Metallurgy invites applications as PhD student (f/m/d) in Process Metallurgy.

The position will be available from 1 February 2023 subject to project funding approval. The employment contract is limited to three years.

Your tasks:

  • Development of a process on the holistic utilization of slags, with a focus on metal recovery through pyrometallurgical techniques
  • Literature research on metallurgical processes
  • Performing metallurgical experiments on laboratory and pilot scale; commissioning, supervision and optimization of equipment and pilot plants
  • Willingness to closely cooperate with other researchers in project
  • Presentation of relevant results at conferences and project meetings
  • Publication of results in high quality journals as part of the development of a PhD thesis

Your profile:

  • Degree (diploma, master) in Metallurgy, Process Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a comparable degree program
  • Interest in engineering and solving complex problems, experience in operating pyrometallurgical equipment (lab, pilot-scale) is advantageous
  • Knowledge of zinc metallurgy is a plus
  • Conscientious, well-structured, creative, independent and team-oriented way of working
  • Good language skills in German, English (spoken and written) is advantageous
  • Structured documentation of experiments and results, reports and publications
