This year's Helmholtz GPU Hackathon will take place at the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding CASUS in Görlitz. At the event, eight teams of five to eight participants will improve their AI or HPC research under the guidance of experts from laboratories, universities and leading companies in a collaborative environment. The goal of the GPU Hackathon is for all attendees to transfer and optimize their scientific applications to modern computer architectures, including CPU, GPU and other computing technologies. Teams should leave the event with either improved applications on the latest supercomputing hardware or with a clear roadmap for the next steps required to utilize these resources.

CASUS Distinguished Lecture Series

Prof. Dr. Barak Hirshberg (Assistant Professor, School of Chemistry, Tel Aviv University, Israel) "Algorithms for long timescales and quantum statistics in molecular dynamics simulations"

Molecular dynamics simulations are powerful, providing microscopic insight into condensed-phase chemical processes. However, two outstanding challenges of the standard algorithms are: 1) extending simulations to longer timescales, allowing the description of phenomena such as the nucleation and growth of crystals, and 2) including quantum statistics at a reasonable computational cost for studying quantum materials. Barak will present recent work on overcoming these challenges.

Zentrumskolloquium

Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Langanke (GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung) "Gold in the Universe"

Where does Nature produce heavy elements like gold or platinum? To answer this question requires interdisciplinary research in astronomical observation, astrophysical modelling and nuclear physics research. The talk will discuss the general understanding of the origin of the elements in the Universe and highlight how the recent observation of merging neutron stars helps to answer this question. Decisive progress towards solving this puzzle is also expected from Europe's next-generation large-scale accelerator complex, the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research FAIR, which is currently under construction in Darmstadt and will allow to experimentally study many of the exotic nuclear physics processes involved in Nature's main sites for element production.

International Science Conference - "Building Bridges for the Next Generations 2024" at the International Congress Center Dresden.

Science has always been a neutral mediator, adept at building bridges and transcending boundaries, whether they are geographical, political, or societal in nature. This spirit was epitomized by the 2023 „Building Bridges for the Next Generations“ conference in Dresden. Building on this success, the Free State of Saxony aims to continue the fruitful dialogue that was sparked among international partners in Central Europe with a follow-up event: Building Bridges for a Net Zero Future.

Achieving Net Zero is a crucial objective because it holds the key to fostering sustainable economic growth and technological innovation. The strong infrastructure and connectivity in Central Europe, coupled with a rich history of scientific innovation, create an environment conducive to pioneering the transformative technologies and policies necessary to achieve Net Zero. The conference will thus focus on these key areas of research, that define the region of Central Europe:

  • Microelectronics (Green IT)
  • Sustainable Construction
  • Hydrogen
  • Fusion

Saxony meets Lower Silesia: science across borders

The conference held at INNSiDE by Meliá in Dresden aims to foster scientific collaboration between the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) on one side and the University of Wrocław as well as partnering Polish research institutions on the other side. The following focus topics have been identified:

  • AI & Simulation,
  • Big Data & Analytics,
  • Sustainability & Circular Economy,
  • Novel Materials, and
  • Life Science & Digital Health.

The event is the successor of the CASUSCON held in 2022 in Wrocław that successfully helped to establish interdisciplinary partnerships, exchange knowledge and support young researchers from Lower Silesia and Saxony.

Abstract submission deadline for talks is April 20 and the registration deadline is May 14, 2024. To submit your abstract and register, visit the event website.

The conference serves to present the excellent research in Central and Eastern Europe, especially Poland, Saxony and the Czech Republic, and in this way to position the region as an important science and technology location. The event is aimed primarily at young researchers, providing them with a platform for discussion with representatives from politics, business and society. On the one hand, this should provide participants with the opportunity to network within the scientific community across disciplines and borders in order to lay the foundation for cross-border cooperation in the long term. At the same time, they should have the opportunity to establish contacts with important decision-makers. Therefore, young companies and start-ups from the region should also be addressed.

Strongly Coupled Coulomb Systems (SCCS)

SCCS 2022 was held July 24-29, 2022 in Görlitz, Germany. The conference was hosted by the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS) at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf.

SCCS is an interdisciplinary conference focusing on strong Coulomb interactions in many-body systems. This is the fifteenth of a series of international conferences covering theory, simulation, and experiment.

Systems and topics of interest are very diverse: dusty plasmas, electrons in semiconductors and nanostructures, charged colloids and DNA, astrophysical plasmas (planetary or stellar interior), quark-gluon plasmas, dense plasmas generated by shock waves or by laser/ion/electron beams, nonneutral and ultracold plasmas, dense hydrogen, and statistical and kinetic theories of strongly coupled Coulomb systems.

The special feature and interest for this conference are that it brings together people from very diverse fields, researchers who nevertheless share a common interest in systems with one single unifying theme: strong Coulomb interactions. The SCCS Conference emphasizes common behavior and techniques arising from the strong Coulomb interaction, an emphasis that favors cross fertilisations that would otherwise never happen.
