Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS)

The Ion Beam Center has been operating an accelerator mass spectrometry beamline in user mode with limited personnel capacity for several years. Although the IIM is in an excellent technological position for this application, the actual research portfolio of the AMS is not in materials science, but in the field of geosciences and environmental sciences as well as astrophysics and climate research. In 2019, a professorship for accelerator mass spectrometry and isotope research with an associated department was successfully established at the IIM. The declared aim is to intensify networking with the Institutes of Resource Ecology (in the field of actinides), Fluid Dynamics (in the field of solar magnetic fields), Radiation Physics (in the field of nuclear astrophysics), and the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (in the field of trace analysis). In addition, new user groups are to be developed for the IBC.
