Freiberg, 10.10.2018. The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) – part of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and in close cooperation with TU Bergaklademie Freiberg – is about to commence construction work on a new pilot plant for metallurgical processes. The purpose is to significantly expand application-oriented research into the extraction and recycling of strategic raw materials. Saxony’s State Ministry for Higher Education, Research and the Arts is funding the project with a grant of 10.2 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund.

When complete, the new pilot plant will be used by HIF staff working on the extraction and recovery of strategically important metals to scale up their research results from laboratory scale to a pilot scheme. The technology facility will be equipped in such a way that different metallurgical processes and procedural steps can be realistically combined and digitally networked. This will create a globally unique research infrastructure.

Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony on 17th October, commencing at 11 am (convene in the foyer) at the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology of the HZDR, Chemnitzer Strasse 40, 09599 Freiberg.

Professor Roland Sauerbrey, Scientific Director of the HZDR, will formally open the event. There will then be short speeches by Saxony’s State Minister for Higher Education, Research and the Arts, Dr Eva-Maria Stange, by the Rector of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Professor Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, and by the Mayor of Freiberg, Sven Krüger, after which the ceremony itself will take place. The Minister of State, together with HIF Directors Professor Markus Reuter and Dr Jens Gutzmer as well as the guests of honour, will unveil a construction site sign. The symbolic turning of the first sod by the politicians and scientists present will also provide a suitable photo opportunity.

At the end of the event, at around 12:00 hrs, the Science Minister for Saxony and the directors of the HIF will be available for interviews and statements. There will also be an opportunity for media representatives to go on a selective tour of laboratories at the Institute.
