Flotation: 3D visualization. Flotation is commonly used to separate metals from crude ore. During flotation, the finely ground ore is mixed with water. The addition of chemicals makes the ore particles differentially wettable; valuable substances are extracted while worthless particles are left behind. The valuable substances are attached to air bubbles, transported upwards and can thus be separated.
