Scientists have conducted laboratory experiments at the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory that generated the extreme compressions necessary for pressure-driven ionization. Their research provides new insights for atomic physics at gigabar pressures, which benefits astrophysics and nuclear fusion research.
