Research Activities

The scientific activities of the nuclear physics division concentrate on applied nuclear physics covering nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure physics for research and technology, materials science using positron annihilation spectroscopy, and the development of detectors for basic science and medical applications.

I am member of the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) collaboration which conducts experiments at Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GSI and the future FAIR facility.

I act as a chair-elect of the collaboration board of the Helmholtz portfolio initiative "Detector Technologies and Systems" and I am responsible for the activities at HZDR.

The list of research activities and experimental facilities I have contributed to:

Activity Location Status
Positron annihilation lifetime and energy spectroscopy HZDR
ELBE Linac (MePS, GiPS)
Sponsor (CoPS)
Nuclear transmutation with neutrons and photons HZDR
ELBE Linac: neutron time-of-flight facility
ELBE Linac: photon scattering
Detector Development HZDR and other Helmholtz institutions within the  "Detector Technology and Systems" program active

Technical Activities

  • Data acquisition management including hard- and software of the bremsstrahlung facility at the ELBE accelerator. Parts of the system are based on the Multi-Branch-System developed at GSI. An extended online-documentation of data acquisition hard- and software is available.
  • Design, setup of experiments on induced fission, photo-dissociation, activation at the bremsstrahlung and neutron time-of-flight facility at the ELBE accelerator.
  • Design, setup of experiments on positron annihilation spectroscopy at the ELBE accelerator with the gamma-induced positron spectroscopy setup GiPS, the monoenergetic positron annihilation spectroscopy setup MePS, and the source-based positron annihilation setup SPONSOR at HZDR.
