Studies of Biology and Physics at the Universities of Marburg, Bochum und Freiburg, and the MPI for Radiation Chemistry in Muelheim a. d. Ruhr, supported by the "Deutsche Studienstiftung".

1991 phD on "Infrared-spectrocopic investigation of proton translocation in bacteriorhodopsin", received the "Hans-Griesebach-Prize" of the University Freiburg.

1991- 1994 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellow at Rockefeller University (Prof. Sakmar)

1994-1996 Research grant and habilitation-fellowship from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft

1996-2002: Habilitation (1999), spectroscopic research on visual transduction, lecturer in the field of biophysics at the University of Freiburg.

2002 head of the Biophysics Division at the HZDR.

Since 2008 Faculty member of the Dresden-International-Graduate-School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB).

Since 2014 Professor "Structural Dynamics of Biomolecules" TU-Dresden at the BIOTEC

2016-2018 Speaker "Molecular Biphysics Section" of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Biophysik
