ROBL - Synchrotron Radiation Beamline at ESRF

Description of the equipment and possible experiments

ROBL consists of three main parts which are located in lead-shielded hutches for radiation protection reasons
  • X-ray optics
  • Radiochemistry experimental set-up
  • Materials Research experimental set-up

The X-ray optics selects a monochromatic beam in the energy range 5 - 35 keV for the experiments.

Radiochemistry Hutch (RCH)

This experimental set-up is designed for X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments predominantely on radioactive samples (liquid or solid). The maximum allowed activity is 185 MBq.

Possible experiments:

  • EXAFS and XANES in transmission mode
  • EXAFS and XANES on dilute samples in fluorescence mode
  • EXAFS at low temperatures

Materials Research Hutch (MRH)

This experimental end-station is designed for  structural studies of materials using
X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectometry. A high-duty six-circle diffractometer with different  detection systems is available.

Possible experiments:

  • X-ray diffraction on powders or compact samples in symmetric mode or with grazing incidence / exit in vertical and horizontal geometry
  • X-ray reflectometry
  • Wave length variation for anomalous scattering
  • Diffraction studies on liquids with free surfaces
  • Diffuse scattering and reciprocal space mapping

General remarks

All experiments are fully computer controlled from outside the hutches. The presence of researchers near the investigated object is not possible for radiation protection reasons.
If users want to install their own equipment for an experiment, an agreement with the responsible person for the experimental set-up should be made in advance.
The detailed data evaluation is expected to be done in the home institute of the researcher.
