Junior scientists group "nano spin electronics"
Dr. Heidemarie Schmidt is head of the junior scientists group "nano spin electronics", which was newly established in 2007 at the Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. Dr. Schmidt and her five colleagues are interested in a new material species: ferromagnetic semiconductors. In a few years it could be applied in producing spin LEDs with fascinating new properties at low prices.

Dr. Schmidt and her group make use of standard materials employed in semiconductor industry like gallium arsenide and zink oxide. Magnetic ions are then implanted into these materials, thus gaining an additional switching mechanism: the magnetic moment of the implanted ions, which - in the nanometer range - influences the electron spin. Spin electronics or spintronics (a blend of spin and electronics) opens up new ways by using the spin of the electron for data representation and processing - in addition to its electrical charge like in traditional semiconductor electronics. This area is only a few years old; however, in the near future scientists are expecting new technical components operating with the spin of the electron, thus being considerably faster than current products. |
Doctoral students 2007
In 2007 the number of doctoral students at FZD increased beyond 100 for the first time. The FZD's second PhD seminar took place in Rabenberg from 26 - 28 September 2007. Doctoral students were able to gain an overview of current research topics and methods at the FZD. |
Trainees 2007
The FZD has an excellent reputation for its vocational training, for which it has been regularly honoured by the Dresden Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In 2007 FZD trainees were once again among the best in the area covered by the Dresden Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Aline Ritter was trained as chemical laboratory worker and graduated with a fantastic 99 %, for which she was awarded the title "Best Trainee at FZD" on 28 August 2007. Additionally, she was honoured as best trainee by the Dresden Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as best trainee in her vocation in Saxony. |
Nadine Matho plays in the same league and was educated as technical drawer at FZD. She was also awarded as best trainee by the Dresden Chamber of Commerce and Industry in November 2007 as well as best trainee in her vocation in Saxony. Stefanie Böhm was honoured for her degree as best European office clerk in 2007 by the Dresden Chamber of Commerce and Industry. |
