Modelling, simulation and experiments on boiling processes in pressurized water reactors
Summary
The collaborative project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the framework of the R&D program "Energie 2020+" and accomplished by Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), the University of Applied Sciences in Zittau/Görlitz (HSZG), the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), the Technische Universität München (TUM), the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and ANSYS Germany is directed on the development and validation of CFD models of boiling processes in PWR in the range from nucleate subcooled boiling to the phenomena of film boiling. The project is oriented towards basic research and will focus on model development, simulation and experiments on different scales. Small scale tests performed at universities explore the microscopic phenomena of boiling processes. On the other edge of investigated scales a rod bundle test is under construction at the large scale test facility TOPFLOW in Rossendorf. The instrumentation of this test with fast X-ray tomography will deliver nonintrusive data with high temporary and spatial resolution suited for CFD model development and validation. The application of new measuring techniques will enable the improvement of the state-of-the-art in science and technology.
Funding period: Sept. 2009 - Jan. 2013
