Department of Magnetism
The department of magnetism concentrates on research in the following topics:
- Nanomagnetism/magnetization dynamics, where the fast switching of the magnetic properties in nanostructures is explored
- Interface magnetism, where we investigate the effects of structural defects on the magnetic properties at interfaces
- Spin: Interaction and Control, where spin waves and their interactions are investigated
- Magnetic functional materials
- Micromagnetic Modeling
- Ferroic Materials, Layers and Applications
The mentioned areas target basic as well as application oriented research. External funding is acquired at the Helmholtz-Association (HGF), the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and the European Union (EU). Spintronics: Highly Efficient Structures for Tomorrow's Information Technology
To manage the large data streams of the future we need new strategies and solutions that are more energy-efficient, which means avoiding the build-up of heat and enabling a faster data rate. At the HZDR research is focusing on one electron property in particular: the magnetic spin.
