HIBEF User Consortium

The Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (HiBEF) is established as an XFEL User Consortium (UC) to extend the baseline configuration of the High Energy Density (HED) Instrument to include high power lasers, pulsed magnets, and high pressure cells to create extreme conditions. Initial funding for HiBEF came through the Helmholtz Strategic Infrastructure proposal, "Helmholtz International Beamlines (HIB)," led by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden – Rossendorf e. V. (HZDR) and Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY). The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC-UKRI), with support of an Oxford-led Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) grant, contributes the DiPOLE 100-X system. Taken together, the Helmholtz-HIB investment, the STFC-UKRI contribution, plus sizeable institutional contributions from HZDR and DESY secure the main HiBEF installation and its operation for 10 years.  In consideration of this major contribution (ca. 100 Mio €) to European XFEL, the HiBEF UC receives Priority Access for up to 30% of the user time of the HED Instrument for 10 years.

The User-Consortium proposal included over 80 groups from more than 60 institutes from 16 nations. It comprises more than 350 scientists and more than 300 PhD students.
