The Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) pursues the objective of developing innovative technologies for the economy so that mineral and metalliferous raw materials can be made available and used more efficiently and recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. PhD Student (m/f)

The position will be available from 1 June 2018. The employment contract is limited to three years.


  • analysis of satellite and available airborne data
  • data acquisition in the field together with our project partners in an active mine under sub-tropical climate
  • data integration of Drone-borne, ground (drillhole) and mineralogical data
  • spatial modelling of all available information in a single resource model
  • publication and presentation of scientific results


  • very good Master's degree in geoscience, remote sensing, computer science or related field
  • good knowledge in (at least one of) the following topics:
    • machine learning and remote sensing image analysis
    • geostatistics and spatial analysis methods
    • data-base integrated 3D modelling (e.g., LeapFrog, Oasis Montaj)
  • hands on experience in open-source programming (R, python)
  • very good English language skills (both written and spoken), Portuguese is advantageaus
  • ability to work in remote places and in active mines under (sub-)tropical climate
