Short Description:

According to the site selection law, rock salt, besides clay and crystalline rock, represents a potential host rock formation for the final disposal of radioactive waste. The geological, geochemical and geophysical properties of salt are investigated in detail, but there is still little knowledge about the indigenous microorganisms and their influence on the high-level nuclear waste, in which uranium is the main component of the spent nuclear fuel rods.

In this master thesis the interactions of a Halobacterium isolate with uranium(VI) will be investigated, depending on different influencing factors, such as uranium concentration, temperature or pH value. Several microscopic (optical microscopy, SEM) and spectroscopic (TRLFS, ATR FT-IR-spectroscopy) methods will be used to analyse the occurring processes on a molecular level.
