The 30th of August is a special day for the participants in the Summer Students Program at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The 17 young researchers will present the results of their research to the public in the lecture hall. They had gathered in Dresden in July to spend their semester vacation getting to know the world of research at the HZDR, having come from 12 different countries – Belarus, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, India, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. Here, they are assigned to different teams and work for six to twelve weeks on a scientific topic – independently, but under supervision. The public presentations will start at 9.30 a.m.

For example, Elizaveta Starykh is focusing on positron annihilation spectroscopy in the Department of Nuclear Physics with Dr. Maciej Oskar Liedke. This analytical technique makes it possible to determine point defects and dopings in material samples and surfaces right down to the atomic level. Starykh is a young scientist from Russia studying at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and working at the Schlumberger Moscow Research Center. “I always wanted my summer vacation to be beneficial for my career in physics, but at the same time I wanted to visit different countries and get to know people from all over the world,” she says. “Working with so many talented people encourages me to improve myself and continue my further career as a scientist."

Nastassya Horlava from Belarus is studying applied mathematics and computer sciences at the Belarusian State University in Minsk. Describing her expectations of HZDR, she says: "I wanted to gain new experiences in international research teams with people from all over the world." She is working with Dr. Guido Juckeland, Computational Science Group. "It's the first time I’ve ever worked on such a large-scale project, she says: "My colleagues are very friendly and helpful. I have been very impressed with all the intensive discussions among the scientists at HZDR on their projects."

Lenka Hronova from Prague is studying experimental particle physics at the Czech Technical University. The supervisor of her bachelor thesis told her about HZDR. Here, she wants to get a taste of real science. “At the university, we have to learn many things and it’s all theory. It's really exciting to see it applied in my work here.” Furthermore, she wants to improve her English and German language skills. Lenka Hronova does her research with Dr. Katerina Falk at the Institute of Radiation Physics. After completing her studies, she would like to go into scientific researching.

L’ubomír Gabriš graduated in material sciences and technology at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. In September, he will start his PhD thesis in the Advanced Materials and Material Design study program. “Some colleagues highly recommended a research stay at HZDR to me. So I applied – and was delighted to be accepted. It’s amazing for me to see all these scientists pursuing the same interest. But it’s also a great challenge to work here together with such experienced scientists.” The 25-year-old is looking forward to learning as much as possible about state-of-the-art ion beam analytics. He is working with Dr. Axel Renno at the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology of the HZDR.

In addition to a cycle of lectures on research topics at the HZDR, the Summer Student Program also includes joint excursions and leisure activities. The program is already running for the seventh year and has proved to be a successful recruiting instrument. The next call for proposals for summer 2019 will be published in December of this year.
