News and Events

Installation of HESEB has started, see the photo gallery following this link

Research stay programme

As part of the HESEB project, research stays are offered to enable users from SESAME member countries to gain hands-on experience on soft X-ray beamlines at European synchrotrons, and to put the experience just gained in practice into the framework of a stay at SESAME.

Whom we are looking for

  • You are a researcher from a university or a research institution in a SESAME member country, i.e. in Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, Palestine or Turkey.
  • You would like to use soft X-rays from a synchrotron in your research, but you feel that you are lacking the necessary experience.

What we offer

  • Research stay of two months between January and April 2022 at a soft X-ray beamline of one of the participating synchrotrons.
  • Integration into the beamline team and participation in their daily work including support of the on-site users
  • Learning by doing and possibility to discuss and to ask questions to team colleagues and to user groups
  • Ample opportunities to establish new contacts
  • Possibility to put the newly acquired knowledge and skills into practice during the return phase of one month at SESAME
  • Full coverage of the costs for travel and accommodation plus daily allowance

The registration is closed. The applications are currently in the process of being evaluated. The installation of HESEB at SESAME, ongoing since the start of this year, completely blocks the SESAME people in this week (week 3). Finalisation of the evaluation process had therefore to be postponed to week 4.

Planned events

SESAME Cultural Heritage Day

An online event to promote cultural heritage sciences at SESAME
Date: Wednesday, 16 February 2022

Time: 9am - 1:15pm EET / 8am - 12:15pm CET

Please see for further details.

Twinning programme

Due to the still ongoing pandemic and in view of the fact that the HESEB project will stop at the end of 2022, we unfortunately are obliged to recognise that we have to cancel the  Twinning programme. We are pleased to be able to realise the Research Stays (see above) and will transfer the resources foreseen for the Twinning program into this activity.

First scientific workshop on soft x-rays research

The workshop initially scheduled in Istanbul in spring 2020 had to be postponed due to the spread of the corona virus (COVID 19). At that time, nobody would have expected the extent and the duration of the corona pandemic. Optimism led to several attemps to re-schedule this workshop, but they had to be stopped in an early stage. 2022 will provide us with the last chance to realise a comprehensive and instructive workshop with many participants. The current focus is on fall 2022. As soon as reliable information will be available, it will be communicated in this place.

HESEB colloquium

The last HESEB lecture within the frame of the HESEB colloquium took place as an online event on December 15th, 2020.

The lecture was be given by Dr. Florian Kronast from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie.

The title of the lecture is "XPEEM: Magnetic Imaging and Spectroscopy at the Nanoscale".

Due to the ongoing pandemics we will be obliged to have an online meeting.
Please register via the following link, if you are interested in this meeting: https://forms.gle/u4CMxH1HUybHe5566
The link to the meeting will be provided to the registered participants shortly before the event.

Context

The history of SESAME

The research centre SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East, www.sesame.org.jo) near Amman/Jordan was officially founded in 2004 as an international research project under the auspices of UNESCO with multilateral cooperation of countries of the Middle East region (Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, Palestine, Turkey). It was the idea and tireless commitment of Herman Winick (SLAC), Gustav-Adolf Voss (DESY) and Herwig Schopper (CERN) which eventually lead to the foundation and build-up of a research facility in the Middle East – with the vision that close scientific cooperation would make a contribution to peace and stability in this region.

Scope of the project

The five Helmholtz centres DESY, FZJ, HZB, HZDR and KITjoined forces to build at SESAME a new and state-of-the-art Helmholtz-SESAME soft X-ray beamline (HESEB) in the soft X-ray range to be used for a large number of top-class scientific applications and to create new cooperation potentials with German and international research groups. Corresponding training, education and support measures offered by the participating Helmholtz centres shall guarantee the international scientific attractiveness and quality of the beamline as well as secure its long-term scientific use and excellence by creating and supporting scientific user communities within the region and by building up and connecting long-lasting cooperation among the SESAME members and with other user groups worldwide.

User support, cooperation development, Seed Projects / Teaming

To secure a large and sustainable request for scientific use of the soft X-rays from the Helmholtz SESAME beamline, dedicated workshops and schools are being offered in order to build up a strong user community in the SESAME region in the medium and long term. In addition, grants for several months of training or research stays of future SESAME users at adequate synchrotron radiation sources and research centres in Germany will be offered.
