Freiberg scientist receives award for special scientific achievements and fundamental contributions in the geology of mineral deposits

The DMG is a German non-profit society for the promotion of mineralogy, which annually honors young scientists for outstanding work of the past five years. Dr. Mathias Burisch, scientist at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), receives the award for his interdisciplinary research on hydrothermal mineral systems. “His ability to bring together the disciplines of petrology, geochemistry and geology of mineral deposits in order to gain new insights, especially for understanding deposit-forming processes, is exceptional. This is proven by several publications in international first-class journals, which emerged from his dissertation on silver-cobalt-nickel-arsenic mineralization in the Odenwald and can already be regarded as groundbreaking,” the DMG justifies its choice. “The award is a great honor and recognition for the work we have done. I would therefore like to thank Jens Gutzmer, Gregor Markl and Axel Gerdes as well as the doctoral students Marie Guilcher, Sebastian Haschke, Nils Reinhardt and Laura Swinkels of the junior research group, who made significant contributions to the research results”, emphasizes Burisch. Since 2018, he has headed the junior research group Mineral Systems Analysis at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The work of this group on the genesis of different types of deposits in the Ore Mountains already provides a large number of important and novel results on age, fluid and metal sources and fluid-rock interaction processes that are relevant for the formation of these ore deposits.
For Dr. Mathias Burisch it is the second prestigiuos award, in January 2020 he was honored with the Waldemar Lindgren Prize of the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG).
