DALI – Dresden Advanced Light Infrastructure

The Dresden Advanced Light Infrastructure (DALI) facility, unique in the world, will couple a high-field radiation source for terahertz radiation with a free-electron laser for wavelengths in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). Its purpose: the experimental investigation of dynamic processes in materials of various kinds. In combination with positron secondary radiation, a system for ultrafast electron diffraction, and special user laboratories for physics, materials science, chemistry, biology, and medicine, DALI will create the conditions for extremely diverse, cutting-edge research.

For example, the intense terahertz radiation source could enable researchers to specifically influence functionally relevant electronic states in solids, for example in nanostructures and high-temperature superconductors. The decoding of materials for ultrafast data processing, which are considered promising candidates for 6G mobile radio standards, could also come within reach based on this approach. In addition, DALI could provide insights into the role that water plays in life on Earth.

The intense VUV radiation source, in turn, promises a better microscopic understanding of chemical reactions, such as in catalysis, combustion, atmospheric physics and astrochemistry. In addition to the photon sources, an additional source of intense positron radiation provides scientists with a tool that allows them to dynamically study defects in crystalline solids and porous materials on the nanometer scale.
