The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) recognizes the Director of the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) at the HZDR, Dr. Jens Gutzmer, with the Silver Medal 2022. With over 7000 international members from industry and academia, the SEG is the world's largest association in the field of fundamental and applied mineral deposit research. The Silver Medal has been awarded since 1980 to recipients in mid-career for excellence in original work in the geology of mineral deposits. The award ceremony will take place next year at the SEG Conference in Denver, Colorado (USA).

"Of course I am delighted to receive the award, but the Silver Medal is not so much a reflection of my personal achievement, but rather of the scientific excellence and innovativeness of ore deposit research in Freiberg. This is defined specifically by the close cooperation between the HIF and the researchers of the Mineral Systems Analysis Group at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg over the past years," says Dr. Gutzmer.

Jens Gutzmer holds a Diplom in mineralogy from the TU Clausthal-Zellerfeld. He completed his PhD in geology at the Rand Afrikaans University in South Africa. Mineralogy and geochemistry of the ores of the Kalahari and Postmasburg Manganese Fields in South Africa were the focus of his postgraduate research activities. This was followed by lectureships in South Africa and Germany before he was appointed as founding director of the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology in 2011. He holds a visiting professorship at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa and is a member of acatech, the National Academy of Science and Engineering in Germany.
