The specialists in data analysis from Görlitz

Since about two and a half years, experts from disciplines as diverse as climate and environmental research, systems biology and astrophysics have been working in Görlitz on new digital solutions and methods to develop a systematic understanding of the complex phenomena of our environment. From the beginning, the rapid success and development of the center for data-intensive systems research CASUS (Center for Advanced Systems Understanding) was largely based on the interaction of the different expertise of the founding partners, which finally resulted in long-term funding after an evaluation last summer. On April 1, CASUS left its project phase and is now a new HZDR institute. More

Laser flashes for cancer research

Irradiation with fast protons is a more effective and less invasive cancer treatment than X-rays. However, modern proton therapy requires large particle accelerators, which has experts investigating alternative accelerator concepts, such as laser systems to accelerate protons. A research team led by the HZDR has now successfully tested irradiation with laser protons on animals for the first time, as the group reports in the journal Nature Physics. More

On the Hunt for Ultra-Thin Materials Using Data Mining

2D materials usually consist of atomic layers only a few nanometers thick and are particularly good at conducting heat and electricity, for instance. Recently, it became known that they can also exist on the basis of certain metal oxides that are of special interest for nanoelectronics applications. A research team led by the HZDR has now succeeded in predicting 28 representatives of this new class of materials using data-driven methods. More

Energy³ – Generating Storing Saving

For the energy revolution in Germany to succeed, it requires entirely new concepts and solutions. As a multi-programmatic center, the HZDR combines energy research with resource and materials research. For example, our scientists are developing novel liquid metal batteries or optimizing electorlysers for the production of hydrogen, the energy source of the future. These and other energy-related projects are the subject of the most recent issue of our research magazine “discovered”. We hope you enjoy reading it (English version coming soon!). More

Groups implemented as an organizational form

At the start of the year, the Board of Directors introduced a new organizational form. Across HZDR, there is now the possibility of forming groups as structural subunits at the department level. After the Scientific Director, Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, and the Administrative Director, Dr. Diana Stiller, had advocated for the measure during the strategy process, the Board office, the Personnel Affairs department and the Works Council did the necessary conceptual groundwork. Following this decision, many areas are now planning to introduce groups. HIF was one of the first institutes to officially implement them. More

Introduced: Program Manager for Administration 4.0

In order to boost the digital transformation at all levels of the center, the Board of Directors has launched the program “Administration 4.0” as part of the Strategy 2030+. The aim of this measure is to support our research activities through more efficient processes in the administration and to improve the consistency of the IT landscape. Since the start of the year, Thomas Frühauf has been supporting the successful implementation of this project. As program manager, he is responsible for the operational side, including scheduling, budgeting and resource planning. More

Lucy Mensing Program: A boost for careers instead of leaving academia

Women are still underrepresented in senior positions in Germany. In science, this is particularly true for non-university research institutions. In its Equal Opportunity Plan, the HZDR has therefore made a commitment to increase the number of women in all scientific positions and to counter the migration of women from science, especially during the postdoc phase. To this end, the Board of Directors launched the Lucy Mensing Program a few months ago in cooperation with the Equal Opportunities Officer. The fund is intended to support researchers who take time off for family reasons. Two female colleagues are already receiving funding. More

Science Year 2022 – Participate!

The Science Year organized by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the initiative “Wissenschaft im Dialog” (Science in Dialogue) breaks new ground in 2022. This time, the focus is not on a single topic, but on the questions of all citizens. The aim of the motto “Participate!” is to strengthen participation in scientific development processes and to open up new future fields for research and research policy. Science Year's main participation campaign is the so called IdeenLauf (Ideas Run).

Save-the-Date: Summer Party 2022 on September 6

After a long wait, it's that time again: Our next HZDR Summer Party will take place on Tuesday, September 6, starting at 2 pm on the research campus in Dresden-Rossendorf. Thanks to a diverse program, there will be something exciting for everyone. You can inform yourself about the current planning on the intranet. Registration for the Summer Party is open until June 30. More

Virtual 3D tour of the biotechnology laboratory

The laboratory of the Department of Biotechnology is now also available in virtual form. Anyone who has always wanted to know what equipment the colleagues from the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) work with can click their way from instrument to instrument on a 3D discovery tour. Information texts, that are also understandable for non-experts, explain how the individual instruments work and what the department is researching with them. More

Exploring corporate cultures with "Company visits"

Would you like to have insights into a company? Would you like to get to know an exciting local employer and ask questions about corporate culture, applications, etc.? The "Company visits" program is a new event format to which the Postdoc Center HZDR-TUD and the Technology Transfer and Innovation department are jointly inviting. The aim of the program is to provide insights into various companies, to make contacts in the working world and thus to explore and expand professional networks in a wide variety of areas. More

DeltaX's online courses receive wide recognition

The team led by Dr. Matthias Streller quickly understood that Corona did not have to be the "end" for the School Lab's offerings. At an early stage, it developed new formats that not only received recognition from the students, but also from various juries. In March, the DeltaX School Lab was awarded 2nd place in the LeLa Prize in the "Digital" category. The LeLa Award honors outstanding achievements by school labs and school lab networks. More

TU Dresden appoints Daniel Bemmerer as honorary professor

The TU Dresden has appointed PD Dr. Daniel Bemmerer of the HZDR as honorary professor. The appointment certificate was handed over to him in a ceremony on Monday, March 28, by rector Prof. Ursula M. Staudinger on the university's campus. With this acknowledgement, the TU honors the nuclear physicist for his special achievements in setting up the Felsenkeller Laboratory, which the university operates jointly with the HZDR. More

Bioartificial implant impresses jury

Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt awarded the HZDR Innovation Prizes 2021 and gave virtual certificates to the three winning teams. The award winners also had the opportunity to present their innovative ideas to a large audience. The first place went to an interdisciplinary team of young scientists who are developing a novel bioartificial implant. More

The machine is alive!

What this saying means at FELBE is explained by user Maximilian Obst from TU Dresden in a video on Lightsources.org. The clip takes a behind-the-scenes look at the free-electron laser at HZDR, which allows various types of secondary radiation for different research purposes ranging from materials science to medical science. Beamline Scientist Dr. Michael Klopf also appears in the video. He talks about how he came to Dresden from the USA and why his day-to-day work at the facility is so rich in variety. More
