Press Release of October 7, 2022

International ambassadors for worldwide collaborations of the HZDR

Twelve foreign scientists who have completed their doctorates or conducted research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) for a period of time and are now working in Finland, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Iceland, Japan, or Mexico are visiting the HZDR this week for an international alumni week. The intensive innovation and exchange program aims to initiate collaborations with companies and scientific institutions around the world. The HZDR intends to internationalize its alumni network with the HZDR-TrAIN project funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In addition, former employees from abroad who are now working all over the world are brought together in the HZDR Innovators Club as experts in knowledge and technology transfer.

"Scientists from twelve nations are coming to our research center these days for this innovation and qualification program. They will exchange their knowledge with each other, expand their own competences and develop new ideas together. The focus is on cooperation and innovation management. We are very pleased about the great interest and warmly welcome the participants," said Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, Scientific Director of the HZDR, about the international alumni week, which will be held for the first time at the HZDR from 10 to 14 October 2022.

One of the participants is Muhammad Nabil Satria Faradis from Indonesia. As a research assistant, he worked in the Computational Fluid Dynamics group of the HZDR Institute of Fluid Dynamics from 2017 to 2018. "I planned and conducted experiments to study the properties of gas bubbles rising in a fluid flow. On this occasion, I learned a lot about innovation and international collaboration," Faradis said. After a further research stay at the University of Melbourne in Australia and the founding of several technology companies, Faradis now works as an innovation expert with the Secretary of State of the Republic of Indonesia.

The program of the alumni week includes workshops on innovation management, the development of collaborations and business models. These will be held by HZDR alumnus Prof. Thoralf Gebel, who holds the professorship for Industrial Management at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. In innovation tours, participants will also gain an insight into current research projects in the field of knowledge and technology transfer in the three research fields energy, health and matter. Furthermore, the guests have numerous opportunities to network, get to know the innovation environment of and spin-offs from the HZDR and meet former colleagues.

"The HZDR-TrAIN project and the HZDR Innovators Club will further develop the existing alumni networking of the HZDR in a new quality in the areas of cooperation opportunities and transfer management. All HZDR alumni have the opportunity to contribute their expertise as well as deepen their acquired knowledge, make new contacts and shape the future together," said the HZDR's Head of Personnel Affairs, Nadine Möhring-Lotsch, explaining the purpose of the project, which is being implemented jointly by the Personnel Affairs and Transfer departments. At the end of the first international alumni week, tandems of international alumni and scientists of the HZDR or from spin-offs will be formed, who will meet regularly online and continue to drive cooperation projects forward.

With the HZDR-TrAIN project, the HZDR is breaking new ground in addressing and integrating alumni as experts into a network - the HZDR Innovators Club. "I hope that with the innovation and exchange week we will leverage potential for new collaborations and networks and that the program for international alumni will become an integral part of our alumni and innovation work," concluded Dr Björn Wolf, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer at HZDR.
