HZDR Awards: Recognition for special achievements
The HZDR Board of Directors, Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt and Dr. Diana Stiller, presented the HZDR Awards 2023 at a festive awards ceremony in May. The prizes are awarded annually to employees who have distinguished themselves in the past year through outstanding accomplishments or commitment. The research prize went to Dr. Oleksii Volkov and Dr. Oleksandr Pylypovskyi from the Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research. The two physicists succeeded in demonstrating a unique form of magnetic interaction in curved nanomaterials. Further awards were given in the categories of technology, transfer, promotion and communication. More

Setting out into the quantum world
The German Physical Society is celebrating the 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics next year. In 1925, Werner Heisenberg and other physicists developed the approach for a consistent theory that is now considered the best experimentally verified theory in physics. Scientists at the HZDR are making a significant contribution to continuing this impressive legacy. The current issue of our research magazine "discovered" is dedicated to the exciting world of quanta (issue currently in German only). More

“I want to ensure HZDR research doesn’t get into the wrong hands”
A few months ago, a new member of staff joined the HZDR’s Board Office. Since the fall of 2023, Pedro Roldan-Vazquez has been supporting the staff department by designing and implementing a compliance program on issues involving an international dimension. As part of the project, which is set to run for three years, the lawyer will develop a risk analysis system that should help the center to make its cooperation with research establishments around the world much safer. How does the system function and what does it mean for international research collaborations? INSIDER asked Pedro Roldan-Vazquez. More

Flow research on the outskirts of space
For years, various models have been developed to describe an important class of mixing effects that occur, for example, in the flow in a chemical reactor. Experimental validation, however, has lagged far behind due to the superimposition of gravity effects. A European research team involving the HZDR and partners at the University of Szeged and Université libre de Bruxelles has now closed this gap with experiments conducted under weightlessness. More

Cornelius Fischer appointed professor at Leipzig University
Leipzig University has appointed Dr. Cornelius Fischer as a professor. The newly created professorship, with the title "Radiochemistry and Radioecology", focuses on research into the interaction of radioactive nuclides with synthetic materials and the environment. Together with his department at HZDR's Leipzig Research Center, Fischer has been conducting research in this field for many years. With the new opportunities offered by the professorship, he wants to further advance his subject in both research and academic teaching. More

New participation record at the Dresden company run
It has become a tradition: several teams from the HZDR compete in the Rewe Team Challenge Dresden, the largest company run in eastern Germany, with creative names such as "Curies Erben" or "Cool Run-Ings". This year, a new record was set for the 15th edition on June 12, 2024: 132 sports-loving colleagues took to the starting line in 33 teams of four - more participants than ever before. They all successfully reached the finish line after five kilometers. A strong team performance! More
United for democracy
At the end of May, around 2,500 people - including many colleagues from the HZDR - came together in Dresden to send a strong signal for democracy and fundamental rights. At the large-scale event "United for Democracy", which was organized by numerous institutions from Dresden under the umbrella of the DRESDEN-concept and #WOD Weltoffenes Dresden networks, the HZDR led the northern procession from Jorge-Gomondai-Platz to the city center.
