Process parameters and microprocesses

Many factors simultaneously influence the outcome of beneficiation, extraction, and refining processes. Creating a fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanisms and microprocesses controlling the process performance is key to efficiency and sustainability. Our research spans the following research topics:

Particles

We analyze particles to predict their behavior in separation processes and to understand the factors driving or hindering separation processes.

Colloid and interface science

To control the interactions between the different phases and reagents in interfacial separation processes, we quantify the physical and physico-chemical properties of particle surfaces.

Process kinetics and thermodynamics

By measuring reaction rates and studying processes such as complexation, we improve the performance efficiency of different process technologies and the quality of the recovered minerals and metals.

Metal-slag-gas equilibria

We improve the efficiency of metallurgical recycling processes while increasing product quality by researching the so-called metal-slag-gas equilibria to make otherwise hard to process metals such as zinc or contaminants such as arsenic and lead accessible.
